Join Prospect for an evening of conversation with Simon Schama and Bettany Hughes to celebrate the publication of Schama's long-awaited The Story of the Jews: Finding the Words 100 BCE - 1492.

The Story of the Jews is an epic of endurance against destruction, creativity in oppression, joy amidst grief.

About the speakers:

Simon Schama is University Professor of Art History and History at Columbia University. His award-winning books, translated into fifteen languages, include Citizens, Landscape and Memory, Rembrandt's Eyes, A History of Britain, The Power of Art, Rough Crossings and The American Future.

His art columns for the New Yorker won the National Magazine Award for criticism and his journalism has appeared regularly in the Guardian and the Financial Times where he is Contributing Editor. He has written and presented forty films for BBC2 on subjects as
diverse as Tolstoy, American politics and John Donne and won an Emmy for The Power of Art.

Bettany Hughes

Bettany Hughes is a historian, author and broadcaster who has devoted much of the last twenty years to the vibrant communication of the past. Her first book, Helen of Troy: Goddess, Princess, Whore was published to great critical acclaim and has now been translated into ten languages. Bettany has made a number of factual films for the BBC, Channel 4, PBS, Discovery, The History Channel and ABC for both the British and International markets including The Spartans, When The Moors Ruled in Europe, Athens:The Truth of Democracy, The Women of the Bible and Helen of Troy. Her latest book 'The Hemlock Cup' has been published around the world.
